In 2024, self-adhesive printed label consumption in the European Union fell notably to 4.4M tons, reducing by -39.6% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, consumption, however, posted a buoyant expansion. As a result, consumption attained the peak volume of 7.3M tons, and then shrank markedly in the following year.

The size of the self-adhesive printed label market in the European Union soared to $9B in 2024, growing by 49% against the previous year. This figure reflects the total revenues of producers and importers (excluding logistics costs, retail marketing costs, and retailers' margins, which will be included in the final consumer price). In general, consumption recorded a perceptible decrease. The level of consumption peaked at $23.2B in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2024, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Ireland (2.4M tons) remains the largest self-adhesive printed label consuming country in the European Union, accounting for 55% of total volume. Moreover, self-adhesive printed label consumption in Ireland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest consumer, Spain (823K tons), threefold. Portugal (293K tons) ranked third in terms of total consumption with a 6.7% share.

In Ireland, self-adhesive printed label consumption increased at an average annual rate of +54.8% over the period from 2013-2024. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual rates of consumption growth: Spain (+24.9% per year) and Portugal (+113.8% per year).

In value terms, Spain ($2.5B) led the market, alone. The second position in the ranking was taken by Denmark ($1.3B). It was followed by France.

In Spain, the self-adhesive printed label market expanded at an average annual rate of +15.5% over the period from 2013-2024. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual rates of market growth: Denmark (+15.0% per year) and France (+2.1% per year).

In 2024, the highest levels of self-adhesive printed label per capita consumption was registered in Ireland (477 kg per person), followed by Portugal (29 kg per person), Denmark (20 kg per person) and Spain (17 kg per person), while the world average per capita consumption of self-adhesive printed label was estimated at 9.9 kg per person.

In Ireland, self-adhesive printed label per capita consumption expanded at an average annual rate of +53.4% over the period from 2013-2024. The remaining consuming countries recorded the following average annual rates of per capita consumption growth: Portugal (+114.3% per year) and Denmark (+17.0% per year).

In 2024, approx. 4.2M tons of self-adhesive printed labels were produced in the European Union; waning by -41.3% against the year before. Over the period under review, production, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2023 when the production volume increased by 476%. As a result, production reached the peak volume of 7.1M tons, and then declined markedly in the following year.

In value terms, self-adhesive printed label production soared to $9B in 2024 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded a noticeable setback. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $23.3B in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2024, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Ireland (2.4M tons) remains the largest self-adhesive printed label producing country in the European Union, accounting for 58% of total volume. Moreover, self-adhesive printed label production in Ireland exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Spain (805K tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was held by Portugal (292K tons), with a 7% share.

From 2013 to 2024, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Ireland amounted to +55.9%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Spain (+29.1% per year) and Portugal (+57.3% per year).

In 2024, the amount of self-adhesive printed labels imported in the European Union rose rapidly to 375K tons, surging by 6.3% on 2023. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the period from 2013 to 2024; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2022 when imports increased by 19% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of 403K tons. From 2023 to 2024, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, self-adhesive printed label imports declined to $1.5B in 2024. In general, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 14%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $1.8B in 2023, and then dropped in the following year.

The Netherlands was the largest importer of self-adhesive printed labels in the European Union, with the volume of imports recording 119K tons, which was approx. 32% of total imports in 2024. Germany (55K tons) held a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by France (9%), Belgium (8.5%) and Spain (7.5%). The Czech Republic (17K tons), Poland (15K tons), Italy (15K tons), Denmark (9.2K tons) and Austria (7.3K tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2013 to 2024, average annual rates of growth with regard to self-adhesive printed label imports into the Netherlands stood at +7.4%. At the same time, Germany (+10.6%), Denmark (+6.9%), Belgium (+6.5%) and France (+2.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Germany emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in the European Union, with a CAGR of +10.6% from 2013-2024. Austria, Spain and Poland experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Italy (-3.6%) and the Czech Republic (-5.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of the Netherlands (+11 p.p.), Germany (+7.8 p.p.) and Belgium (+2.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2013-2024, the share of Poland (-2.3 p.p.), Spain (-3.9 p.p.), Italy (-4.6 p.p.) and the Czech Republic (-7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest self-adhesive printed label importing markets in the European Union were the Netherlands ($244M), France ($216M) and Germany ($186M), with a combined 42% share of total imports.

The Netherlands, with a CAGR of +4.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in the European Union stood at $4,108 per ton in 2024, which is down by -18.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a perceptible shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 30%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $5,332 per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2024, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2024, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Austria ($9,551 per ton), while the Netherlands ($2,048 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+4.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2024, shipments abroad of self-adhesive printed labels decreased by -17.1% to 153K tons, falling for the second year in a row after three years of growth. Overall, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2022 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of 193K tons. From 2023 to 2024, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, self-adhesive printed label exports reduced to $1.6B in 2024. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $1.8B in 2023, and then shrank in the following year.

In 2024, Germany (27K tons), followed by Poland (16K tons), the Netherlands (15K tons), Italy (15K tons), Belgium (13K tons), the Czech Republic (11K tons), Spain (9.7K tons) and France (9.4K tons) represented the main exporters of self-adhesive printed labels, together committing 77% of total exports. The following exporters - Denmark (5.2K tons) and Ireland (4.4K tons) - each finished at a 6.3% share of total exports.

From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by the Czech Republic (with a CAGR of +9.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Germany ($310M), Italy ($220M) and the Netherlands ($192M) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2024, together comprising 46% of total exports. France, Poland, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Spain, Denmark and Ireland lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 35%.

Poland, with a CAGR of +6.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The export price in the European Union stood at $10,331 per ton in 2024, picking up by 3.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 10%. The level of export peaked in 2024 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2024, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($14,442 per ton), while Poland ($6,198 per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2013 to 2024, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by the Netherlands (+4.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
